I’d like to break window coverings into 4 main categories and explain some key characteristics and best places to use each:

1. Blinds - coverings that have multiple pieces strung together either horizontally or vertically, but operate as a single unit. Typically one of the most affordable window covering options and come in many materials to match any style including wood, faux wood, vinyl and other man-made materials. Most are easy to wipe clean and faux wood blinds are great for rooms with lots of moisture such as bathrooms and provide a high amount of privacy.
2. Shades - this type of window covering encompasses a single panel of material that generally operates by rolling or folding up (sometimes down), as it is opened. Roman shades are a classic design with fabric customization to integrate perfectly in any space. Roller shades are cost effective and discrete and come in an array of privacy and light filtering options. Wooden woven shades inject warmth and texture into a design while still slim. Cellular shades are top for energy efficiency as their honeycomb cells trap air between the window and room resulting in heat gain in winter and heat loss in summer.
3. Shutters - are permanently attached to the sides of your window frames either inside or out and can be opened or flipped to allow light and airflow. Although it can be a pricey investment, many consider shutters to be an added value to your home as this classic design choice adds architectural interest and functionality to your windows, looking great both on the inside and out.
4. Drapery - fabric panels hung vertically from hardware mounted above your windows, drapery can be an elegant addition that can add texture, pattern, colour or softness to a room. Drapery comes at a range of prices depending if custom or store bought, length and type of material as well as quality of hardware.
